Wildfire Mitigation

Wildfires are no longer confined to the western United States. Dry conditions and prolonged drought could lead to fire impacts in ditches, grasslands, or fields in this area.

Sioux Valley Energy is proactively working to reduce the risk of wildfires throughout its service territory through regular vegetation management, grid maintenance, and hardening practices. Find the Cooperative's wildfire mitigation plan below these fire prevention tips.

Extinguish campfires

Once you are done with a campfire, make sure to put the fire out. Pour water on the fire until the hissing sound stops; don't use just dirt or sand to extinguish a fire. Stir the water into the embers to ensure nothing is still smoldering. Check that the ashes are cool before leaving the area.

Windy days

Be aware of the weather when you decide to burn. Don't burn in windy conditions or when vegetation is very dry. Conditions can change quickly so check the forecast and make sure strong winds aren't on the way.

Debris

Protect your home and buildings by clearing away vegetation and debris, which could catch on fire. Keep roofs, gutters, decks, and patios free of leaves or other flammables. Review the Home Ignition Zone advice when it comes to planting trees or other landscaping.
